Daddy Lumba’s Wives’ Saga: When Love, Law, and Tradition Collide

Ghana has been buzzing recently with news about the late Daddy Lumba’s wives and the confusion surrounding who the real or recognized wife is. As a Ghanaian who grew up listening to Lumba’s timeless songs, this whole situation honestly breaks my heart. It’s a painful reminder that love, fame, and tradition don’t always blend smoothly, especially when death steps in.

According to reports, Akosua Serwah Fosuh, who says she legally married Lumba in Germany back in 2004, has taken legal action to stop the funeral arrangements. Her reason is simple: she wasn’t consulted, even though she believes she is still his lawful wife under German law. Imagine finding out about your husband’s funeral date on social media, that’s truly heartbreaking. What if there is a clash of tradition? 

But on the other side, Lumba’s family insists that Akosua’s marriage was traditionally dissolved years ago. In Akan culture, when a woman presents certain traditional drinks to a man’s family, it can mean the marriage is officially over. The family claims she did that and that since then, Lumba had moved on and was living with another woman, Priscilla Ofori, popularly known as Odo Broni, who bore him six children.

Now we have two worlds colliding: customary law and foreign legal systems. Under German law, a marriage like the one Akosua had with Lumba still stands unless legally dissolved in court. But in Ghana, especially under customary law, marriage and divorce can also happen through cultural practices, not just paperwork. That’s where the real tension lies: one woman holding onto legal documentation, and the other holding onto cultural and emotional recognition.

Beyond the legal battle, this issue raises deeper questions. How do we, as a society, balance tradition and legality in matters of love and family? How do we protect women from being sidelined simply because they live abroad or are separated from their husbands? And how can famous people ensure that their private lives don’t turn into public courtroom dramas when they’re gone?

I personally feel this whole situation could have been avoided with clear communication and proper documentation. It’s easy to point fingers, but life happens; relationships end, people move on, and mistakes are made. What matters now is fairness and respect for everyone involved, especially the children who have to watch their parents’ names trend for the wrong reasons.

Daddy Lumba gave us songs about love, heartbreak, and life lessons. Ironically, even in death, his story is teaching us something important that, no matter how famous or successful we become, clarity and accountability in our relationships are crucial. Love should not leave behind confusion, pain, and legal battles.

As we mourn the legend, I hope this situation encourages more Ghanaians to understand both the customary and legal sides of marriage. Love is beautiful, but when law and tradition clash, it can get messy, even for a legend like Daddy Lumba.
