Ghana Overtakes South Africa as Africa’s Top Gold Producer in 2024

Image
In a historic shift in Africa’s mining industry, Ghana has officially surpassed South Africa to become the continent’s leading gold producer in 2024. According to recent data from CEIC Data , Ghana’s gold output reached an impressive 130,000 kilograms (130 metric tonnes) — outpacing South Africa’s 100,000 kilograms (100 metric tonnes) during the same period. A New Era in African Gold Mining South Africa held the crown as Africa’s top gold producer for decades, thanks to its deep mining infrastructure and vast mineral reserves. However, the tides have shifted. Ghana’s rise to the top is powered by the combined force of expanding large-scale mining operations and a boom in artisanal and small-scale mining activities across the country. Burkina Faso Under Military Rule: The Journey So Far

Image
Since January 2022, Burkina Faso has been under the control of a military-led government following a coup that ousted President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré. The military cited growing insecurity and poor leadership in fighting terrorism as the main reasons behind their intervention. Since then, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who took power in a second coup in September 2022, has been at the center of shaping the country's new direction. Fighting Insecurity One of the government's top priorities has been to tackle the growing threat of jihadist insurgencies. These attacks have displaced nearly two million people and affected several northern and eastern regions. The new regime has promised to regain control of all territories, equipping local volunteers and community-based militias to help combat extremists. Critics have raised concerns about human rights violations and the lack of civilian oversight in these operations. Yet, the government insists that these are necessary sacrific...

By 2030, the IMF forecasts that this debt could balloon to 99.6% of global GDP , placing immense strain on the financial stability of nations around the world. This rise in global debt is primarily attributed to policies adopted by major economies, such as the U.S. tariffs on imports and trade barriers between the world’s largest economies. These measures have had a p...
