When I think about Ghana’s story of innovation, faith, and determination, one name that keeps coming to mind is Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka. He was not just a church leader or a businessman; he was a man who carried a vision bigger than himself. Apostle Kwadwo Safo felt the earth's air on 26th August 1948 in a town called Bom, near Kensere, in the Amansie East District of the Ashanti Region. He was born to Opanin Yaw Safo and Obaapanin Yaa Amoanimaa. Like most children of his time, his early life was modest, with the usual struggles that came with growing up in some parts Ghana that was still building its identity and structure

He attended basic school in his hometown before continuing to the Ghana Technical Works Institute in Kumasi. It was there that he developed love for machines, welding, and technical work. For a sometime, he worked at the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) as a welder. Those years spent learning and working with his hands laid the foundation for the kind of man he would later become, thus, practical, experimental, and courageous.

A Spiritual Calling

In 1969, trust me, most of us had not been formed in our mother's womb, something changed in his life. He felt a spiritual calling and started a small prayer group with a few people. What looked like a simple simple prayer group turned into something much bigger. On 3rd February 1971, that small group officially became known as the Kristo Asafo Mission.

Kristo Asafo was not just another church. It was exceptional. Apostle Safo encouraged his members to mix faith with hard work. Instead of just praying and waiting for miracles, he pushed them to learn trades, farm, build machines, and be self-reliant or independent. For him, Christianity and development were like twins; it cannot be separated. Over the years, the church grew into a massive movement with branches all over Ghana and even in the diaspora – places like the UK, USA, and Italy.

The Birth of the Kantanka Brand

While many knew him as a man of God, he was also a man of innovation. In 1994, he officially launched Kantanka Automobile, a company that aimed to design and assemble cars right here in Ghana, the Gateway to Africa. This was revolutionary at the time because the idea that Ghana could have its own car manufacturer sounded almost impossible.

Through his annual technology exhibitions, Apostle Safo showcased different machines, cars, and gadgets. Some of his inventions amazed people: from vehicles that could be controlled with a wristwatch to televisions that responded to human gestures. His philanthropic work cannot be ignored either. He supported orphans, provided scholarships, and helped build schools and vocational institutions. Many members of his church were encouraged to learn practical skills so they could become independent and useful to society.

Recognition and Honors

His unique contributions did not go unnoticed. In 2007, he received the Order of the Volta (Member Division), one of Ghana’s highest national awards. In 2017, he was honored with the GUBA Innovative Pioneer Award in the UK for his efforts in promoting African innovation. Over the years, he also received the Millennium Excellence Award and several other recognitions both in Ghana and abroad.

In August 2025, false news spread on social media claiming Apostle Safo had died. His daughter came out strongly to deny it, saying he was alive and healthy. Just a few weeks later, however, the reality hit. On Thursday, 11th September 2025, Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka passed away peacefully.

The family, through a statement signed by Sarah Adwoa Safo, confirmed the news on 14th September 2025. They described him as “a true genius, the beacon of hope for many, and a father to the fatherless.” The announcement asked for privacy while funeral arrangements were being planned.

His death marked the end of an era. Ghana had lost not just a pastor, but an inventor, a philanthropist, and a visionary who believed Africa could stand on its own feet.

Legacy

Looking back at his 77 years on earth, Apostle Kwadwo Safo’s life cannot be summed up in one sentence. He was a man who carried multiple identities: pastor, inventor, farmer, herbalist, philanthropist, and visionary.

Yes, he faced doubts and criticisms, but his determination to prove that Ghana could innovate was unmatched. He built companies, inspired thousands, and gave hope to generations who believed that everything good did not have to come from outside Africa.

Even in death, his name continues to inspire conversations about self-reliance, creativity, and the power of mixing faith with hard work. His children and institutions will now carry his vision forward, but his story will always remain a reminder that greatness often begins from humble places.

Final Thoughts

Writing about Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka makes me reflect on what it means to leave a legacy. He was far from perfect, but he proved that one person with a strong belief could change the narrative of a whole nation.
