2025 BECE Results Released: A Moment of Next Decision for Students and Parents

 

The wait is finally over. On Saturday, 23rd August 2025, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) officially released the much-awaited Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results. For months, students, parents, and teachers across the country have been holding their breath, and now the results are out for all candidates to check.

As someone who has sat for this kind of before, I see this moment not only as the end of a cycle but also as the beginning of a new chapter for thousands of young people who also sat for the exams this year. Behind every result slip is a story—of sleepless nights, mock exams, nervous prayers, and hope for a greener future.

The ultimate announcement

According to WAEC, the results were dispatched to schools through the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Directors of Education. This means each school will soon have hard copies for collection. But in today’s digital age, candidates can also check their results instantly online through WAEC’s official results portal. All that’s required is a valid results checker voucher with the PIN and serial number, alongside the candidate’s 10-digit index number and year of examination (2025).

The online alternative has become the preferred method for many families and educators. It saves time and reduces the anxiety of waiting at school. Still, it’s important to stay calm because traffic on the site is usually heavy during the first few days after the release.

The figures nobody can ignore

Each year, results day comes with both joy and disappointment. Beyond the individual performances, WAEC also announced the outcomes of investigations into examination malpractice.

Here is the breakdown:

• 177 candidates had their results totally cancelled.

• 718 candidates shockingly lost their subject results.

• 93 candidates had their entire results withheld pending further investigation.

• 1,240 candidates had some subject results withheld for investigation.

• At the school level, results from 119 schools were cancelled (subject-specific), and candidates from 87 schools had certain subjects withheld.

These numbers highlight the scale of the issue and the determination of WAEC to uphold the integrity of the examination. While this might sound disturbing, it’s important to note that “withheld” does not automatically mean “cancelled.” WAEC has stated clearly that withheld cases will be reviewed, and a final decision will be made by 6th September, 2025.

What “withheld” or “cancelled” actually means

This is where most parents get anxious, so let me break it down in simple terms.

• Withheld: This is a temporary status. WAEC is saying, “We are still looking into this case.” Investigations may confirm that the result is valid, in which case it will be released, or it may prove malpractice, leading to a complete cancellation. If your child’s result is withheld, the best option is to exercise patience and close communication with the school.

• Cancelled: This is more serious. It means WAEC has slated evidence of irregularity. Cancellation can affect one subject or the entire set of results. In either case, it is final and irreversible. That means nothing can be done about it. For families affected, it can be devastating and heartbreaking, but it is also a hard reminder about the importance of honesty and integrity in examinations.

How to check results safely

For those ready to check, here’s a quick step-by-step guide I can confidently share with parents, learners and educators:

1. Go to the official WAEC results portal (eresults.waecgh.org).

2. Enter the index number and select BECE (School) as the exam type.

3. Enter the examination year: 2025.

4. Provide the PIN and serial number from the results checker voucher.

5. Confirm details and click “Submit.”

6. Wait for the slip to load, then download, print, or screenshot for safekeeping.

One small but important tip: double-check the index number before submitting. Many parents panic unnecessarily because of typing errors. Remain calm and ensure every digit is typed correctly.

The scale of this year’s exams

The 2025 BECE was one of the biggest yet, with over 600,000 candidates from across the country sitting for the papers in more than two thousand examination centres. • Celebrate responsibly: If you passed well, enjoy the moment, but don’t let it get to your head. Senior High School comes with new challenges that demand more discipline, hardwork and perseverance.

• Placement is next: The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service will soon open the placement portal for Senior High School and TVET. This is where candidates will confirm which school they’ve been placed in based on their results and choices. Parents should be cautious—use only the official placement portal and avoid so-called “connection men” or agents.

• Prepare for Senior High School (SHS): Think about programme choices—General Science, Business, General Arts, Technical, Home Economics, Visual Arts—and what best matches the child’s strengths. Also consider whether day or boarding will be more suitable depending on the location.

• If disappointed, don’t disappear or get discouraged: Some students may not get the results they dreamt of. If that happens, talk to your teachers or school authorities, explore other programme options, or look at technical and vocational institutions. Education has many paths, and one setback does not end your journey or future career.

Integrity truly matters

One painful reality is that hundreds of results were cancelled this year because of malpractice. Individually, I want to stress this: the value of an examination certificate is in the honesty behind it. Shortcuts may seem attractive in the moment, but they leave scars that outlast any tombstone. Moving forward into SHS, students must learn to put in the hard work and remain discipline. Honest input always pays better dividends than dishonest advantage.
