Daddy Lumba’s One Week Observation and Funeral: My Personal Thoughts

The news of Daddy Lumba’s passing hit me in a way I was not fully prepared for. Personally, it was unexpected. Like many young Ghanaians, I grew up to love his songs, his unique voice, his message, and the emotion he carried in every lyric. To hear that he was no more felt like a personal loss, not just to his family but to the whole country and even beyond. In Ghana, when someone passes away or dies, we usually gather for what we call the “one week” observance. It is a time to mourn together, to reflect, and to officially make preparation for the main or actual funeral. For Daddy Lumba, such a day could never be ordinary. Never! Not for a legend like Daddy Lumba. He was not just a musician; he was an icon, a storyteller, a father, and for some of us, even a teacher through his music.
