Starting April 28, 2025, Ghana will introduce chip-embedded biometric passports, marking a major shift in how citizens travel internationally. If you’re a Ghanaian traveler or planning to renew your passport soon, here’s why this new system matters and what steps you need to take.

What Are Biometric Passports?

Biometric passports, or e-passports, contain a microchip embedded inside the cover. This chip securely holds the passport holder’s data, biometric image, and digital signature. It offers greater protection against identity theft and speeds up airport security checks.



Why Ghana Is Making the Shift

The move to biometric passports places Ghana in line with global travel standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this new upgrade is necessary to:

Will the Old Passports Still Be Valid?
