A Black Wednesday for Ghana: The Helicopter Crash That Took Our Leaders

Image
Wednesday, August 6, 2025, will forever remain a dark day in Ghana’s history. I was getting ready for the day when I received the shocking news that a Ghana Armed Forces helicopter had crashed. At first, I didn’t believe it. But as updates began to pour in, the truth settled in painfully—the crash had taken the lives of eight people , including two respected ministers and other important personalities who were on board. This blog is my way of expressing not just what happened, but how deeply this tragedy has shaken me, and indeed, the whole country. The Crash That Shook a Nation The military helicopter, a Z‑9 type, left Accra that morning, heading towards Obuasi in the Ashanti Region. These were not just any passengers on board—they were national leaders on duty, committed to building a better Ghana. Sadly, the aircraft never reached its destination. It crashed in the Adansi District , and there were no survivors. The victims on board were: Dr. Edward Omane Boamah , our Minist...

Daddy Lumba Passes Away At 60: Ghana’s Highlife Legend (1964 – 2025)

Image
Image Credit: CediRates I never imagined I’d be writing this. I thought Daddy Lumba would always be here. His voice, his songs, his presence—they felt like constants in our lives. But on Saturday, July 26, 2025 , Ghana’s music world fell silent in the saddest way. We lost not just a singer, but a symbol. A man whose music shaped generations. A man whose voice became the sound of our joys, heartbreaks, weddings, and Sunday mornings. Rest in peace, Daddy Lumba. Even now, typing these words doesn’t feel real. How It Started for Me I was introduced to Daddy Lumba’s music at a very young age. My father had a cassette player, and every Sunday morning, like clockwork, you’d hear “Aben Wo Ha” blasting from the living room. It was tradition. You didn’t touch the volume knob. It was Lumba time. As I grew older, I began to understand the lyrics. That’s when I truly appreciated how clever, bold, and poetic he was. Songs like “Theresa” , “Yentie Obiaa” , and “Sika Asem” weren’t just tunes—the...

Understanding Kenya’s Current Situation: Protest, Economy, and Hope

Image
Kenya, a beautiful country in East Africa known for its wildlife, culture, and strong people, is going through a very challenging time. Over the past few months, many things have happened that are affecting people’s daily lives—from violent protests and rising prices to food shortages and drought. In this blog, we will explore the key things happening in Kenya right now. The aim is to help you understand what is going on in simple language. Why Are People Protesting in Kenya? In June 2025, many young people in Kenya started going out to the streets to protest. These protests were sparked by the death of a well-known teacher and online writer, Albert Ojwang. He died while in police custody, and many people believed he was mistreated by the police. This created a wave of anger and sadness, especially among the youth. But the protests were not just about his death. Many people were also unhappy with a new government bill called the Finance Bill 2024 . This bill included new taxes and c...

Israeli Airstrike Hits Gaza’s Only Catholic Church: Civilians Killed, Priest Injured

Image
One of Gaza's few havens of calm has been hit by a new tragedy during a war that has already claimed tens of thousands of lives. At least three individuals were killed and several more, including the parish priest Father Gabriel Romanelli, were injured after an Israeli bomb struck the Holy Family Catholic Church in Gaza on July 17, 2025. This was an assault on more than just a structure; it was an assault on humanity, hope, and the notion that certain locations may remain secure even in times of conflict. Holy Family Church: What Is It? The only Catholic church in Gaza is the Holy Family Church, which is situated in the center of Deir al-Balah. It has traditionally been used as a humanitarian haven for hundreds of civilians, including Christians and Muslims, during times of violence, in addition to being a place of prayer for Gaza's small Christian minority. It is not only a church. In an area plagued by decades of violence, it has served as a refuge, a counseling facilit...

PSG is trying to finish off a strong season after winning the UEFA Champions League this year. Despite playing strong football, Chelsea, which entered the competiti...

Kenya is in Flames: The Youth are Hungry For Justice, Accountability and Fairness

Flag of Kenya. Image source: pixabay Living in Kenya for the past several weeks has been like being inside a cyclone. The sort of storm that brings not just wind and rain but also rage, tears, fire, and bloodshed. Tension lingers in the air like smoke after a fire, making it difficult to even define the current environment. One question remains unanswered for those of us who are closely seeing and experiencing this historical moment: how did we get here? Like a match before it ignites, it all began subtly. In June 2025, blogger and educator Albert Omondi Ojwang passed away while being held by the authorities. Because of his online criticism of a top police officer, he had been detained. Authorities gave a hasty and icy explanation, saying he had "fallen and hit his head." The autopsy, however, revealed different. The inside injuries and the bruises told a different tale. Young people in Kenya decided they had had enough after hearing that narrative. It wasn't mer...
